Jake Malone and Jordan Malone-Forst in front of Jay Malone Motors in Hutchinson, Minnesota

Quick Answer

Because a Jeep or a Ram is usually a vehicle you actually use, and use means it will eventually need something. Factory warranty repairs and recall remedies have to be performed by a franchise Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram dealer, and an online-only retailer is not one. At Jay Malone CDJR in Hutchinson, the service drive, the Mopar parts counter, and the body shop are all in the building where you bought the vehicle — about twenty minutes from most of McLeod County.

Buying a vehicle entirely online is a real option now, and the pitch is a good one: no lot, no negotiating, no Saturday afternoon gone. Some of that is worth having, and we have built most of it into how we work.

What the pitch does not cover is the next four or five years. Around here, a Ram is usually pulling something and a Jeep is usually going somewhere the pavement does not. Those vehicles need parts, service, and sometimes body work — and that is where the difference between a local dealer and a website stops being philosophical.

Who is allowed to do warranty and recall work?

A franchise dealer. That is the short version, and it is the part the online-only pitch tends to skip.

Factory warranty repairs and open safety recalls on a new Jeep, Ram, Dodge, or Chrysler have to go through an authorized dealer, because that is who the manufacturer authorizes and reimburses. An online-only retailer can sell you the vehicle and hand off the title, but it cannot close a recall or file a warranty claim. When the day comes, you are walking into a dealership regardless of where you clicked "buy."

Being straight with you: it does not have to be our dealership. Any franchise CDJR store can handle that work. But there is a real difference between arriving as a stranger and arriving somewhere your history is already on file.

The other half of that coin: we will service your vehicle whether or not you bought it from us. Our service center works on Chevrolet, GMC, Toyota, Honda, Subaru, Nissan, and everything else on the road. You do not need to be our customer to be treated like one. Factory warranty work is the single piece that requires a new CDJR vehicle.

It also matters who is holding the wrench. Nathan, one of our technicians, is an FCA Master Certified Technician — a credential earned through years of factory training and testing across every major system on a Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, or Ram vehicle, and one that has to be kept current as the vehicles change. In a town this size, having that level of certification on staff is not a given. It is not something a website can offer you at all.

What happens when the truck you work out of goes down?

This is the question that actually matters in a county like ours, and it is the one an online-only retailer has no answer for.

A Ram around here is rarely a commuter. It is hauling grain carts, livestock trailers, skid steers, boats, campers, and job-site equipment. A Jeep is on gravel most of the week. When one of those goes down, the cost is not the repair — it is the days you cannot work. A remote seller can email you a list of shops. It cannot pull your vehicle in tomorrow.

Two things shorten that downtime, and both of them are physical:

  • Factory diagnostics that actually see the vehicle. Mopar diagnostic software reads fault codes and system data on CDJR vehicles at a depth aftermarket scanners cannot — Uconnect systems, HEMI calibrations, Cummins diesel parameters, Jeep 4xe high-voltage systems. On a complex electrical or powertrain problem, that is the difference between finding the fault and guessing at it. Our service team is factory-trained and Mopar certified.
  • A parts counter with the part on it. Our Mopar parts department stocks genuine components built to the tolerances your vehicle was engineered around, and orders anything we do not have. A part sitting on a shelf twenty minutes away is worth more than a part that ships in four days.

And when the vehicle does have to stay with us, we have loaner vehicles and a free shuttle, plus service pickup and delivery for Hutchinson residents — we come get it, service it, and bring it back.

Key Takeaways

  • Factory warranty and recall work requires a franchise CDJR dealer. An online-only retailer cannot perform it.
  • We service every make and model, whether or not you bought the vehicle here.
  • Mopar diagnostics read Uconnect, HEMI, Cummins, and 4xe systems at a depth aftermarket scanners cannot match.
  • Our technician Nathan is an FCA Master Certified Technician.
  • Sales, service, Mopar parts, and the body shop are all in one building — no coordinating between shops.
  • We deliver, but paperwork is signed at the dealership. That is fraud protection, and it protects you.

What about body work after a deer or a hailstorm?

It is handled here, by our own collision team, without you coordinating between two businesses.

If you have driven central Minnesota for any length of time, you know the list: deer in the fall, ice in January, gravel chips year round, and hail from roughly May through August when the storms come through. Our collision center has been voted Best Auto Body Shop in Hutchinson, and Ryan and his I-CAR certified technicians work on every manufacturer, not just ours.

There is a quieter reason this matters. One of the ongoing fights in collision repair is over parts — some insurance policies push for aftermarket panels to hold down claim costs. Aftermarket parts sometimes fit close enough, but they are not built to the exact tolerances the vehicle was engineered around. On a modern Ram 1500 with aluminum hood and tailgate panels, crumple zones designed to absorb specific forces, and driver-assist sensors mounted behind bumpers and mirrors, that becomes a safety question rather than a cosmetic one. We use genuine Mopar parts whenever the repair calls for them and your policy allows it, and we will tell you plainly when your insurer is pushing the other direction.

Who will I actually work with?

One salesperson, from your first question to the keys. Then Nick Betker, our Finance Manager, handles the paperwork. That is the entire handoff.

We are a small store, and that changes the experience more than anything we could put in a brochure. There is no lead responder passing you to a product specialist passing you to a closer passing you to a finance office full of people you have never met. The person who answers your first question about a Wrangler is the person standing there when you drive it off. Nick sits down with you once, and he is the same person you call three years later when you have a question about your service contract.

You will see everybody while you are here. Jay, Jake, and Jordan are in the building. Service and parts are down the hall. There is nowhere for anyone to hide, and we think that is the point.

Can I still do this online, by text, or from home?

Almost all of it, yes. The convenience and the local team are not an either-or choice, and that is the part most people assume they have to trade away.

We are also glad to run the whole conversation by text or email, and honestly most of them start that way now. Our sales text line is (320) 317-2079. Ask a question at nine at night and you will get an answer — no phone tag, no pressure, nobody disappearing into a back office to "check with a manager."

Do you deliver, and can I sign from home?

We deliver. The paperwork gets signed here.

That is one more trip than a fully remote purchase, and the reason is worth stating plainly rather than dressing up: vehicle purchase fraud and identity theft are genuine problems in this industry, and signing in person with identification in hand is the strongest protection against someone buying a vehicle in your name. It guards you at least as much as it guards us. Nick has everything ready before you sit down, so it is a short appointment.

What does 45 years in one building actually buy you?

Somebody who is still standing there when you come back.

There has been a dealership at 1165 Highway 7 West for about 45 years. It opened in 1980 as Plowmans and later became Hutchinson Auto Center, and plenty of people in Hutchinson, Glencoe, Litchfield, and Dassel bought their first vehicle in this building under one of those names. Jay and Kristen Malone took it over in 2005, so our family has been running it for 21 of those 45 years. The building's history is longer than ours, and we like it that way.

Here is the fact that says the most about what continuity means: our parts manager, Joel Froemming, has worked in this building for roughly 45 years. He has been behind that counter longer than our family has owned the place — through both previous names and every year since. If you bought a vehicle here in 1985 and walked in tomorrow with a question, there is a real chance the same person would answer it. No website is going to offer you that.

Jay did not start out owning dealerships; he started out washing them, then moved into the service department, which is where he learned the business. He got his first store in Iowa just before he turned 30, and a couple of years later chose between two Minnesota towns. He and Kristen drove out to look at Hutchinson, liked the people, and sold the Iowa store to come here. Their kids grew up on this lot. Jordan came back to work here in 2018, Jake in 2020.

Today it is Jay as Owner, Jake as General Manager, Jordan as Assistant General Manager, Nick Betker in Finance, Brady Forst running Service, and Ryan running the body shop — plus Kristen in payroll and her parents, Tom and Robin Almquist, handling the books and HR. Both sides of the family, three generations, one building. Two franchises, one service department, one body shop, one family.

The thing customers bring up most often, though, is none of that. It is Chloe, the golden retriever in the service drive.

Why does buying local matter for Hutchinson?

Because you can see where the money lands.

Most of our donation dollars go straight back to the local school districts. Strong schools are what hold a town like this together — they are why families move here, why they stay, and why our own kids and grandkids are growing up here. We show up for local career fairs too, because young people in Hutchinson should know a good career is available without leaving town.

Jay, Jake, and Jordan have each gone through the Hutchinson Leadership Institute, and Brady starts this fall. Jordan sits on the Hutchinson Area Chamber of Commerce board and was President of the Hutchinson Ambassadors in 2025. Jay was named Hutchinson Business Person of the Year by the Chamber in 2021, and Jordan was named Hutchinson Young Leader of the Year by the Hutchinson Jaycees in 2025. Those mattered to us because they came from neighbors, not from an industry panel.

The store has been voted Best Place to Buy a Vehicle, Best Auto Mechanic, Best Place to Buy Tires, and Best Auto Body Shop by readers of The Hutchinson Station, more than once. Those are not manufacturer awards. They are our neighbors voting, and we would rather have them than anything an industry group hands out.

Support in this town runs both directions. When we put something on, people show up. When someone else does, we show up. Some of that is on our community involvement page. An online-only retailer is never going to sponsor a Hutchinson ball team, and there is nothing wrong with that — it is simply not what they were built to do.

Common questions about buying local versus buying online

Why should I buy my Jeep or Ram from a local dealer instead of an online-only retailer?

Because the vehicle will eventually need something, and factory warranty and recall work has to go through a franchise Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram dealer. An online-only retailer is not one. At Jay Malone CDJR, service, Mopar parts, and the body shop are all in the building where you bought the vehicle.

Does warranty work have to be done at the dealer I bought from?

No. Any franchise Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram dealer can perform factory warranty and recall work. What cannot perform it is an online-only retailer, because they are not a franchise dealer.

Will you service my vehicle if I did not buy it from you?

Yes. We service all makes and models regardless of where the vehicle was purchased, including Chevrolet, GMC, Toyota, Honda, Subaru, and Nissan. Factory warranty work is the one exception that requires a new CDJR vehicle.

How qualified are the technicians at Jay Malone CDJR?

Our service team is factory-trained and Mopar certified, and our technician Nathan is an FCA Master Certified Technician. That certification is earned through years of factory training and testing across every major vehicle system, and it has to be kept current.

Do you have a body shop on site?

Yes. Our collision center is in the same building, staffed by I-CAR certified technicians who work on every manufacturer. That means you are not coordinating between a dealership and a separate body shop after a deer strike or a hailstorm.

Do you use genuine Mopar parts?

We use genuine Mopar parts whenever the repair calls for them and your insurance policy allows it. Aftermarket panels are not built to the tolerances your vehicle was engineered around, which matters on modern trucks with crumple zones and driver-assist sensors.

Do you deliver, and can I complete the paperwork from home?

We deliver, but the paperwork is signed here at the dealership. Signing in person with identification is the strongest protection against vehicle purchase fraud and identity theft, so it guards you at least as much as it guards us.

Who do I call after I buy a vehicle?

The same salesperson who sold it to you, or Nick Betker for anything on the paperwork side. We are a small store, so the people you met are the people who are still here.

Come see for yourself

Here is the honest version: if you want the lowest possible number on a vehicle you never expect to need help with, an online-only purchase might get you there. That is a real choice and I am not going to talk you out of it.

But most people do need help eventually — a recall notice, a check engine light in February, a deer on County Road 7, a trade a few years down the line. Hutchinson took our family in 21 years ago and we have not forgotten it. We would rather be the people you call than a checkout page you cannot get back to.

Stop by 1165 Highway 7 West, call (320) 587-4748, or text sales at (320) 317-2079. We serve Hutchinson, Litchfield, Glencoe, Willmar, Dassel, Silver Lake, Winsted, Brownton, Stewart, and towns across central Minnesota. Chloe will be here.
